Lesson 2: Targeting Your Job Search

I typically recommend to my resume clients targeting their resumes because those targeted resumes are so much more effective than broad resumes. In fact, I've heard from several job seekers who just post a broad resume up on a job board that they are constantly getting calls for jobs they're not interested in, they've never thought about looking at, and just that aren't going to be a good fit for them. Why do you think that is?
When you target your job search, which also should relay into a targeted resume and to some degree a targeted LinkedIn profile, you're going to find your ideal job that much faster. It's going to eliminate distractions, frustrations, and undesirable job offers.
What is Your Ideal Role?
First, I want you to think about this: What is your ideal role, and what would a typical day look like in your ideal role?
Think about the types of responsibilities that you want. Are you looking to be a generalist or a specialist? Are you looking to be a jack-of-all-trades or specialize in a certain area within this role?
You should also think about the level of responsibility that you may want. Do you want to be support staff or do you want to be a supervisor or a leader?
You should also think about your desired level of customer interaction. There are a lot of job seekers out there who don't necessarily want to work one-on-one with other people or one-on-one with customers. These should things you're looking for in those job descriptions.
Also, consider your desired level of stress. Some people thrive under stress and look for that in a job while others certainly do not. These are different aspects of your ideal role that you need to think about before jumping into a job search.
What is Your Ideal Work Environment?
Next, think about this: What is your ideal work environment?
The work environment is going to align very closely with what companies call “culture," so you need to think about what sort of environment you will thrive in, what sort of environment you will feel most comfortable in, and which will leverage your strengths the most.
There are several different types of work environments and I'm just going to identify a few.
- Are you looking for something active and hands-on?
- Are you looking for something where you can work more independently and analytically?
- Are you looking for a work environment that's going to promote creativity and collaboration?
- Are you looking for something more process-oriented and efficient?
- Do you like competing with people like in a sales environment?
These are different types of work environments that you should consider and should integrate in some way into your resume and LinkedIn profile.
What Are Your Values?
Finally, I want you to think about your values. What are the values that drive you in your career?
Your values should match very closely with the values of the company or organization that you work for. If they don't, you're going to find that job satisfaction is going to be lacking.
Think about the things that drive you, that get you out of bed every morning, and that excite you about your career.
- Achievement and growth?
- Building solid, long-lasting relationships with clients or vendors?
- Family and work-life balance?
- Flexibility within your career?
These are the things that should be evident in your job search as well and part of your job target.
